Composting takes a little effort and know-how, yet it's a great way to turn large amounts of leaves, grass clippings, garden residue, kitchen scraps, etc., into a much smaller amount of soil magic - compost. Composting offers certain advantages over other forms of organic recycling in that the cooking action of composting kills weed seeds and some plant diseases. It helps break down potentially harmful pesticides and herbicides and results in an easily-handled finished product. People may think of composting as simply dumping organic materials into a smelly pile and hoping for the best. This type of pile will eventually turn into compost, but it is not really composting. Composting accelerates the natural process of decomposition and should make no unpleasant odors. Please stop into the Recycling Office to purchase a compost bin for $6.00 each and the backyard composting booklet put out by the Erie County Recycling Office.
